What is the Delfi Emergency & Military Tourniquet (EMT)?
The Delfi Emergency & Military Tourniquet is a life-saving haemorrhage control device designed for tactical, first response, and emergency situations. It is built for durable portability, fast application, and designed to improve safety, making it ideal for both upper and lower limb arterial blood-flow control.
How does the EMT compare to traditional strap tourniquets?
Unlike narrow strap tourniquets, the EMT features a wide bladder pneumatic design that reliably stops arterial blood flow while reducing the risk of nerve damage and pain. In a USAISR evaluation, the EMT achieved arterial occlusion in all tested applications and demonstrated lower reported pain compared to strap tourniquets such as the SOFTT and CAT.
How fast and easy is it to apply?
The Delfi Emergency & Military Tourniquet is designed for speed and simplicity, with one-hand application possible in less than 30 seconds. Its slip-on design allows rapid application even if the distal end of the limb is hard to reach, making it ideal for self-aid or battlefield use.
How does the pneumatic inflation work?
A built-in pneumatic pump delivers fast and safe inflation, The pneumatic system inflates the bladder uniformly, applying circumferential pressure sufficient to achieve arterial occlusion without excessive localized force. This ensures rapid, controlled occlusion without over-pressurizing the limb.
What makes the EMT safe and less painful?
- Optimized width: The bladder is 3.5 in. (8.9 cm) wide, requiring lower pressure to stop blood flow.
- Reduced nerve injury risk: A wider bladder distributes pressure evenly across the limb.
- Independent validation: USAISR found it significantly less painful than tested strap tourniquets.
What sizes and limb types does it fit?
The Delfi Emergency & Military Tourniquet accommodates limb circumferences from 3 in. (8 cm) to 34 in. (86 cm). It conforms closely to both upper and lower limbs, ensuring effectiveness for most users.
Is it durable and suitable for field conditions?
Yes. The Delfi Emergency & Military Tourniquet is made with durable aluminum clamps and high-quality materials to withstand harsh environments. Its design avoids hook-and-loop closures, which can fail if contaminated with mud, dirt, or debris.
Is it portable?
Yes. The Delfi Emergency & Military Tourniquet is lightweight and compact:
- Weight: 7.8 oz (220 grams)
- Rolled dimensions: 5 x 2.75 x 2.5 in. (13 x 7 x 6.4 cm)
It fits easily into emergency kits, medic packs, or vehicle kits, making it ideal for mobile responders.
Has it been recommended by military or medical authorities?
Yes. The US Army Institute for Surgical Research recommends the Delfi Emergency & Military Tourniquet for medics and medic vehicles due to its reliability, effectiveness, and safety in field and trauma conditions.
Is the EMT clinically certified?
Yes, it is a Class I medical device listed with the FDA, registered as a Class I device in the EU, and registered with Health Canada.
Can the EMT be used for Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training?
No. Surgical tourniquet systems are not intended for Blood Flow Restriction training. BFR requires specialized technology and protocols to ensure safe and effective use.
